Oh well, found this absolutely gorgeous polka dot halter bikini at Yumdrop and decided it was gorgeous enough to share.

I personally cannot identify with this label. Maybe it is my size or maybe it is my age but either way, I would not gravitate to the pieces in a boutique. I do think, however, that the line is kind of nifty. The vintage inspired bralette and garter-brief in silver/shortbread from the Spring 2008 collection is actually very pretty. With the decadent lace on the back of the panties and the lovely red bows on front, the set is quite dainty and ladylike. The high-waisted garter-brief is really a brilliant design feature, as it appears to be very comfortable. Further, the bras in the collection seem easy to close with their unique picture hook type fasteners.

What prompted me to research this label was an interview I heard with the two designers, Nikki Dekker and Maayan Zilberman. I have to admit it was not so much the lingerie that piqued my interest but rather the meaning of the term “the lake and stars”. When the designers indicated it was a Victorian era expression for giving a man a great time in bed, I just had to chuckle. I have said time and time again, I love companies that say the obvious in subtle ways!

The designers’ backgrounds are diverse but meld together nicely to create unique, luxury garments. Maayan worked with sculpture while Nikki designed lingerie for Target stores in the US. The two ladies are Brooklyn, New York based and met while at a party three years ago. When asked about the types of customers, to whom the line appeals, they indicated that their customers wanted the same qualities as they did. Fashion conscious, comfortable and inexpensive pricing. They went on to say that underwear was just another layer of clothing to be seen not to be hidden away.

The line is sold in Canada at the old and well-known Holt Renfrew stores and in the United States at high scale lingerie boutiques. Several online shops also have a large selection of the line so it may be possible to purchase internationally.

Analysts are waffling with the recent announcements of Victoria’s Secret CEO Sharen Jester Turney that the company needs to revamp its image. In the wake of poor 2007 sales and the downturned US economy, analysts are recommending that the garment industry is not where investors should find themselves. The thought is that many people will be downsizing their wardrobes in order to make it through 2008 financial uncertainty.

And while apparel shopping may suffer low sales in a poor economy, other analysts are countering by saying lingerie is in a league of its own. Investing in companies such as Limited Brands is a smart idea. The rationale behind this notion is that when times are tough, women will dispense with designer clothes and expensive blouse or dress labels. But women still want to feel good about themselves and will continue to spend their money on quality bras and panties.

So apparel in general may suffer but lingerie, on the other hand, may sustain or do better. Added to this, the announcement that Victoria’s Secret may have come too far from its roots and needs to get back on track, may prove beneficial to the company in 2008. The company is scheduled to open thirty-one new stores and remodel another forty-five this spring.

If they can find ways to appeal to and regain their original customers. older women who moved away from the brand, then 2008 may be a successful year. The CEO has identified what she believes to be the problems and all indicators point to a major shakeup.
